This is truly a sporting event you have to see to believe. On August 6, the World Dog Surfing Championships took place in Pacifica, California, near the San Francisco Bay, and hundreds of people gathered to watch dozens of dogs ride the waves.

“I can’t even explain his passion for it and how much he enjoys it. He has such a good time,” a dog owner said of his 7 ½-year-old Labrador Charlie, who came in second place in the large/XL dog category. The event also featured a dog costume contest, mobile pet adoptions, and “Yappy Hour” on the beach, NBC Bay Area reported. “I like the gathering. It’s a big event, and a lot of people from all over come and join us, and then seeing the dogs actually surf is really kind of a funny thing to watch, and they’re really good surfers,” Pacifica resident Patrick Sayres said.
