Let’s be real: There are few among us who couldn’t benefit from a little side income, whether the extra dough goes toward paying for essentials or funding a passion project without dipping into savings. Which is why now’s as good a time as any to consider becoming a driver with Lyft.

One of the main perks of working with the rideshare platform is having the flexibility to set your own schedule. Only able to drive when the kids are in school? No problem. Retired from your career but looking to turn free time into earnings? Done.

And with the company’s Women+ Connect feature, women and nonbinary drivers can increase their likelihood of matching with women and nonbinary passengers — which can not only provide more peace of mind but also offers the opportunity to form new connections. Built in partnership with the nonprofit Human Rights Campaign, the National Sheriffs’ Association, and other collaborators, it’s about making rides feel better for everyone involved.

“Women+ Connect was built with intentionality to make rideshare better for women and nonbinary riders,” Human Rights Campaign Chief of Staff Jay Brown explained. “When rideshare is better for these folks, it’s better for everyone, and we at HRC stand behind that.”

Here’s how it works: After you sign up to be a driver, you can choose to turn the feature on or off anytime. When it’s on, the app will prioritize matches with women and nonbinary passengers. It’s not a guarantee that every person you pick up will fall under those categories, but it ups the likelihood — and the more women and nonbinary people who join, the more the likelihood is increased.

The feature is available in all U.S. cities where Lyft operates, and drivers are already speaking up about the impact it’s had in helping them make money within their comfort zone. “With women, it’s a whole different dynamic,” said Georgie Oliver, who has been driving with Lyft since 2015. “We speak a common language.”

Making extra money is great — having more control over how you make that extra money is even better. Veronica Brown, who’s clocked over 3,000 rides, agrees: “It’s a sigh of relief we breathe at the same time.”
