Perhaps you have a pool in your apartment complex or even one right in your backyard — but is it 3,000 feet long? Deep enough to swallow a 13-story building? Tucked among a jungle’s treetops?

Listen, we’re by no means trying to make you envious. Any cool body of water, whether at your local YMCA or your best friend’s house, is a boon during the hot summer months. But there are some truly incredible pools around the world that seem like they’d be heaven to take a dip in — and while we can’t transport you to any, maybe just gazing at them through your screen will help you beat the heat.

You know those fascinating infinity pools people love to post on social media, the ones that look like they have no boundaries? SkyPark Infinity Pool is one of the crown jewels, and it’s also been proclaimed the world’s largest, at nearly 500 feet long. Located atop a 57-story luxury hotel, it may not be a good hang for those afraid of heights, but thalassophobes can rest assured: The water is only about 4 feet deep. Oh, and don’t worry about falling over the side. The disappearing edge is, of course, an illusion — a wall at the edge acts as a safety barrier.

Joule Pool at The Joule | Dallas, Texas

Top of a tall building not thrilling enough for you? How about taking a plunge into a pool that’s literally hanging off the side of one? (Writer’s note: No thanks.) According to The Joule hotel in Dallas, its pool extends 8 feet beyond the side of the building and “provides guests the sensation of swimming out beyond the hotel’s edge — giving ‘hanging out by the pool’ a whole new meaning.” While many hotel pools are exclusive to guests, this one is available to the public through ResortPass.

Sky Pool at Embassy Gardens | London, England

Noticing a theme here? People (or pool designers?) seem to really love bodies of water being as far above ground as possible — in this case, 115 feet up. Billed by its engineers as “the world’s first fully transparent swimming pool,” the over 80-foot-long Sky Pool at Embassy Gardens in London stretches between two apartment buildings like a bridge.

OK, so maybe heights and transparent bottoms don’t faze you — but swimming just feet away from a posse of sharks will surely raise your eyebrows. The incredible Tank Pool at Las Vegas’ Golden Nugget hotel not only offers guests the thrill of swimming alongside aquarium denizens (separated by glass), but it also has a three-story water slide for them to catapult into the experience. Only in Vegas, right?

Pearl Diving Pool at Deep Dive Dubai | Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The Guinness World Records title for world’s deepest swimming pool for diving formerly went to Y-40 The Deep Joy, which opened in 2014 at the Hotel Millepini near Venice, Italy, and could theoretically submerge a 13-story building. But in 2021 the torch was passed to the Pearl Diving Pool at Deep Dive Dubai, a cavernous pool that’s over 196 feet deep and home to an artificial sunken city for visitors to explore. It’s intended for free divers, scuba divers, snorkelers, and other intrepid aquatic athletes.

Calling itself a “sanctuary suspended between earth and sky,” the Hanging Gardens of Bali is a luxury resort (emphasis on the luxury) located deep within the island’s jungles. Its famous twin-tier infinity pool, with contours designed to resemble those of the surrounding natural landscape, is just one of the draws for swimmers — individual villas also have their own private infinity pools that seem to “float above the [forest] canopy itself.”

Saltwater Pool at San Alfonso del Mar | Algarrobo, Chile

Why swim in the ocean when you could swim in a 3,000-foot-long saltwater pool right next to it, sans rip currents and creatures grazing against your legs? We kid, of course — the ocean is wonderful, but so is this marvel at the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Algarrobo. According to travel publication Islands, the pool cost $2 billion to build, holds 66 million gallons of water, and spans nearly 20 acres. Guests can scuba dive, sail, paddle, or just challenge themselves to swim laps.
