This summer, Nice News is partnering with the National Parks Conservation Association for our Cause of the Season — a quarterly fundraising initiative spotlighting nonprofits doing essential work to make the world a better place. Did you know that there’s a rare orchid species only found in one U.S. national park — Florida’s Big Cypress National Preserve? How about that there’s a group of dogs assisting with essential archaeology work at Richmond National Battlefield Park in central Virginia? Or that there’s a subterranean river at Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve named after ancient Greek mythology? And, in the spirit of today’s holiday, did you know that there are five national park features named for the Fourth of July and its history?
We wouldn’t either, if not for the National Parks Conservation Association. The nonprofit is doing essential and timely work, with a stated mission of “protecting and enhancing America’s National Park System for present and future generations.”
That includes sharing important work being done in the parks and spotlighting the wildlife, like the aforementioned ghost orchid, that call these spaces home. It also means fighting for the more than 430 National Park Service-managed sites in the country — whether on the ground, in the courtroom, or on Capitol Hill.
It’s no secret that right now is a fraught time for the country’s park system: Massive staffing cuts have made it more difficult for the remaining park staff who protect, maintain, and operate the parks. Additional funding cuts would further jeopardize the spaces that help make this country what it is.
“Our national parks aren’t just places on a map,” NPCA President and CEO Theresa Pierno said in a statement to Nice News. “They’re our shared legacy, safeguarding the beauty, history, and culture of our country. For over a century, Americans have not only visited these battlefields, recreation areas, seashores and historic sites, they’ve also been protecting them. Now more than ever our parks need us as much as we need them.”
These essential spaces need our support more than ever — and donating to NPCA through Nice News’ fundraiser is just one way to do that. Below, check out four more things you can do for parks right now, courtesy of the nonprofit.
- Contact Congress: National parks are beloved by Americans and critical to the economy of every state. We need Congress’ help more than ever to protect these places. Call, email, or write to Congress about the importance of preserving our parks for future generations.
- Get Involved Locally: Every park has a First Amendment zone. Engage everyone you know with these tools and encourage them to speak up for our national parks.
- Thank Park Staff: National park staff are the heartbeat of our parks — safeguarding our lands, preserving our history, and building community.
- Spread the Word: There are many ways to share the importance of our national parks and public lands. Share information on social media from trusted resources. Go on TV, podcasts, and other communication channels. Shout it from the rooftops!
